02. A Glimpse Of The Flow For New Users
Smooth First Contact
Petwell allows users to manage everything: input pet information, shop for supplies, book vet or grooming appointments, set reminders for key activities, and track nutrition and health status.
Taking care of pets can be demanding, with so much to remember—from supplies to health needs. While many apps offer calendar management, shopping, or vet consultations, few combine all these essential functions in one place.
Petwell is designed to simplify life for pet owners and help pet supply businesses grow. It caters to pet owners’ needs, making it easier to care for their pets while becoming a part of their everyday routine.
Quick Start

Peace of Mind
First impressions are crucial for user retention, and as the saying goes, usually they don’t get second chances.
Since Petwell is a versatile app, it's essential that users have a smooth, easy-to-follow onboarding experience.
To achieve this, I designed a minimalist welcome page featuring the business's logo and tagline, followed by simple pages that briefly explain the app’s key features to avoid overwhelming users with too much information at once.
After introducing the app, the next step is seamlessly gathering basic pet information to personalize and enhance the user's experience.
These data inputs empower businesses to better understand customer needs, preferences, and behaviors, allowing for a more tailored experience. By doing so, both users and businesses benefit from a more meaningful and connected interaction.
Petwell turns the often tedious task of data entry into a quick and enjoyable experience. By asking concise, relevant questions and utilising simple push-button prompts, we minimise effort and make the process intuitive and swift.
Petwell keeps all your pet care tasks and important events at your fingertips, giving you confidence that everything is well-organised and under control.
With easy-to-set reminders, one-tap purchasing, and hassle-free service bookings, users can conveniently manage all aspects of their pet’s care. Records are stored for quick access whenever needed.
To enhance clarity and organisation, tasks are color-coded, and vector icons provide intuitive visual cues, making actions quick and easy to follow.
Clear Directions
Petwell streamlines registration by offering social media sign-in options, allowing users to register or log in with just a tap—no lengthy forms or email verifications needed.
The clear placement of login and signup buttons on a single page ensures a smooth and confusion-free process.
Designed with simplicity and accessibility in mind, the app's interface features a clean, minimalistic home page. Thumb-sized images and buttons allow for effortless navigation, even when users have their hands full—whether they're walking their pets or carrying groceries.

Understanding User Pain Points and Market Gaps
User Interviews & Surveys
The research phase began by gathering insights directly from pet owners through 15 user interviews and 2 rounds of surveys. The goal was to uncover pain points and challenges they face in managing daily pet care.
Competitor Analysis
I analysed popular apps like Chewy, Rover, and Petco to identify strengths and weaknesses. While these apps excelled in specific areas (e.g., shopping or booking services), none combined comprehensive pet care with an intuitive, all-in-one solution.
Key Insights
Overwhelm
Managing schedules for feeding, vet visits, grooming, and shopping became stressful for users, especially for multi-pet households.
User Friction
Users felt overwhelmed by repetitive data entry across different apps and desired a more streamlined experience.
Need for Integration
Users were frustrated with having to switch between multiple apps (reminders, health tracking, shopping, and booking services).
Define &
How might we simplify and centralise pet care management in a single, user-friendly app to reduce stress for pet owners while improving their overall experience?
User Personas
Based on research, we developed 3 core personas:
-
Busy Pet Parent (single pet, time-constrained)
-
Multi-Pet Family (manages multiple animals, needs organisation)
-
Green-hand Pet Owner (new to pet care, seeking guidance)
These personas helped guide feature prioritisation and design decisions.
User Journey Mapping
We mapped out the user journey for a typical day, from receiving a reminder about feeding, checking pet supplies, ordering food, and adding a grooming appointment. This highlighted key touchpoints where the app could reduce friction and simplify tasks.

Keeping Users @ the Center of Design Decisions
Usability Testing
To evaluate the effectiveness of our design, we conducted 3 rounds of usability testing with 12 participants, representing each persona. We measured:
-
Ease of Onboarding: How intuitive the onboarding process was for first-time users.
-
Dashboard Navigation: Whether users could quickly understand and navigate the unified dashboard.
-
Task Completion Time: How fast users could set reminders, add services, and make purchases.
Feedback & Iterations
Positive Feedback
Users loved the minimalist onboarding and how all essential features were available in one app. The push-button prompts were praised for making data input fast and painless.

Improvements Needed
Some users requested more customisation in reminders, and a few suggested clearer instructions for adding services.
Action Taken
We added customizable reminder settings to allow users to adjust reminder frequency and alerts. We also refined the service adding flow to make it more intuitive by integrating a simple calendar view.
Key Learnings
Onboarding in
Smaller Screens
Onboarding is a critical phase as it often serves as a user’s first interaction with your product, where first impressions are made quickly. If the onboarding experience is too complex or overwhelming, users are less likely to engage with the app. Given the smaller screens and the fact that mobile users tend to have shorter attention spans—often using apps in varied environments like commuting or walking—onboarding must be both efficient and flexible. A well-designed onboarding flow directly influences user retention, making it essential to focus on this aspect and incorporate user feedback to ensure users feel comfortable and confident from the very beginning.
Contextual Design
Designing for mobile apps requires deep consideration of how and where users will interact with the product. Petwell’s emphasis on thumb-friendly icons and one-handed usability reflects the importance of contextual design, where the user’s environment is a key factor in shaping the experience. Mobile users are often in motion, multitasking, or only able to dedicate brief moments to the app. By anticipating these situations and creating a UI that allows for quick, easy access, we can further improve usability and engagement.
